Why Borneo Ironwood?
It is harder than Chengai wood.
Borneo Ironwood / Kayu Ulin
Borneo Ironwood is a large tropical hardwood tree that grows abundantly throughout Indonesia . Iron wood is prized for its durability, strength, and its natural resistance to decay, wet conditions, and insect infestation. Ironwood’s remarkable properties have already made it the top choice for commercial and residential decking. It is the wood used for decking on the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Manpower in Singapore and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Myanmar Ironwood is of lesser quality.
Given its well-established reputation as a premium decking material, Iron wood is an obvious choice for outdoor furniture. In addition to its strength, it has a beautiful dark color and a tight grain that gives it a very consistent coloring.
You may be wondering why Ironwood is not more widely used for outdoor furniture. The answer is simple – the wood is so hard that it can be difficult to machine into a finished product. We have solved this problem with advanced manufacturing techniques and we are proud to offer you our exceptional Iron wood outdoor furniture priced for a great value.
Physical Properties of Ipe
Hardness: The physical hardness of Ironwood is remarkable. The graph below shows the relative hardness of Ironwood along with several popular woods. The ratings are from the Janka test, commonly used to measure wood hardness. It is the number of pounds per square inch required to drive a small steel ball half its diameter into the surface of the wood. Ipe wood is more than 368% harder then Teak wood! And it is harder than Chengai wood.
——————————————————————–
Density: The first thing you will notice about our Iron wood decking is how heavy it is. In fact, Ironwood is the one of heaviest wood that is available for commercial usage. As you can see below, Ironwood is super-dense, as measured by the weight of the wood in pounds per cubic foot. Ironwood is 40% heavier than Teak wood.
Sources for Wood Measurements – Wood Handbook: Wood as an Engineering Material, US Forest Service; Tropical Timbers of the World, US Forest Service.
BORNEO IRONWOOD Family: Lauraceae
Distribution: Throughout the lowlands of Borneo, other Indonesian islands, and the Philippines; occasionally abundant.
THE TREE May reach a height of 100 ft, with trunk diameters of exploitable trees up to 36 in.
THE WOOD General Characteristics: Heartwood light brown to almos bright yellow when freshly cut, darkens on exposure to a deep reddish-brown, very dark brown, or almost black; sapwood bright yellow, darkening on exposure, sharply defined. Texture fine and even; grain straight or only slightly interlocked; somewhat lustrous; has a lemon-like odor that persists, no marked taste.
Weight: Basic specific gravity (ovendry weight/green volume) 0.86-0.92air-dry density 64-71 pcf.
Janka side hardness 3,020 pound for dry.
Working Properties: In spite of its high density the wood can be sawn without difficulty, blunting of cutters is only moderate; machines cleanly; reported to be difficult to glue with the synthetic resins.
Durability: Heartwood is rated as very durable, service life of 50-100 years in ground contact
is reported; immune to termite attack. A service life of 20 years and more for marine work in tropical waters is reported.

Hi, how different is Ipe wood compared to palm wood in terms of durability, hardness & maintenance?
February 13, 2011 8:04 am
Ironwood and coconut wood are both durable and extremely hard timber. Ironwood is called ironwood, is becos it is as hard as iron.
while coconut wood, you have to buy from reliable supplier. as coconut wood comes in 3 different grade. soft wood. medium hard wood, and extreme hard wood.
It really depends on the wood and the price that you pay…
Maintainence wise, ironwood is easy to maintain, 1 coating of maintainence oil every 3 years will do the job.
while coconut wood will need more frequent maintainence as the wood has splinters that will splint quite easily if it is not coat
properly. Please note not all installer knows what are the best type of maintainence oil for coconut decking. and installation of
coconut timber decking, the installer must be knowledgeable about the characterastic of coconut decking.
