Your pergola is the ideal place to spend time outdoors but if you find yourself avoiding it because it just looks dull then it’s definitely time to decorate! It can be hard to know where to get started which is why we’ve put together some great decorating tips to get you going.
The Power of Plants
One thing that you should definitely not overlook when decorating your pergola is the sheer power of plants. Using plants both in and around the pergola will make a huge difference, turning your pergola from something dull into something amazing. If your pergola has battens as the roof, use climbing plants to your advantage. In just a short amount of time, the climbing plants will have grown up the posts and started to cover the roof, creating beautiful dappled light. As well, you can plant around the pergola itself, using a mixture of foliage and flowering plants. Look for scented flowers for that something extra. Of course, you can also use planters and potted plants on the actual pergola itself to give some extra colour, or you can even grow vegetables and herbs if you want plants that you can use. Hanging plants are another great idea.
Furniture Makes all the Difference
Your pergola may look amazing otherwise but without furniture, you’ll find that it never ever gets used. The furniture is often the most dominant part of the pergola so you want to make sure that you get it right. Look for furniture that suits the size of the space – too small and it’ll just look out of place and too large and it will just dominate the space. Some types of outdoor furniture to choose from include dining settings, occasional tables, ottomans, outdoor lounges, day beds, arm chairs, hammocks, bench seats, and banana lounges. These can be made from one or a combination of wood, wrought iron, aluminium, plastic, resin, glass, rattan or wicker, ensuring that you can find materials that will perfectly complement your pergola area while still being able to stand up to the outdoor life.
Don’t Be Afraid to Accessorise
Plants and furniture are important for your pergola area but the finishing touches can sometimes make the biggest difference of all and this is where you have to accessorise. The beauty is that you have complete freedom here, limited only by your budget and imagination. Use things such as outdoor fireplaces, candles, torches, lanterns, tablecloths, centrepieces, hurricane lamps, cushions, throw rugs, outdoor rugs, and ornaments to create your very own outdoor themes. Best of all, you can change these as you like, so you can keep up with the latest trends. Don’t forget to use lighting as accessories either as this makes a huge difference to the feel of an area. Fairy lights, LED lights, and solar lights are excellent options and they are inexpensive and easy to install.
