How to Extend Your Home with Decking
When it comes to extending your home with decking, the good news is that you have plenty of choices! One perennially popular choice is to build a deck at the rear of the home and to have large bi fold doors installed, so that the deck ends up feeling like a natural extension of the kitchen and the living areas. Of course, this is not your only option. If you like to sit and watch the world go by, you can build a deck at the front of your home, either all the way across the front (so it can be accessed from bedrooms as well) or to your preferred side. Another choice is to build your deck around more than side of the home. For example, you could have the main part of the deck at the rear of the home, with a smaller deck on the side of the home. The main part can be used as an outdoor room while the smaller area can be used for drying laundry, growing herbs, or other “utilitarian” purposes.
If you are using decking to extend your home, the key is to get the size of the deck right. If it is too small, it will not provide any practical usable space. If it is too large, however, it will overwhelm the yard and may even result in you not having any garden space at all. You will also need to make sure that all safety aspects are met as, in essence, your deck will be an outdoor room. This means that you will need balustrades if your deck is more than a certain height off the ground, as well as a staircase if your deck is to be elevated. One thing that should not be overlooked is the lighting. Make sure your deck is well lit so that it is safe to use at all times of day (and good lighting will make your deck look great as well!).
Get the Most Out of Your Decking Area
There are a myriad of options for getting the most out of your decking area. For example, you could install a barbecue at one end of the deck, or for a true outdoor living experience, you could go all the way and install a full outdoor kitchen. Both of these options will allow you to prepare meals outside with ease, and you’ll be able to talk to your guests as you cook! Furniture is of course another important option and you can make use of an outdoor setting, day beds, lounges, arm chairs, rockers, hammock chairs, bench seating, coffee tables, or whatever else you fell will be needed. Provide comfort and jazz up the look of your outdoor furniture with colourful cushions and throws that can stand up to being used outdoors. If you need additional privacy or want to block the wind and rain, outdoor blinds, cafe blinds, or timber screens are just some options for doing so.
