A pergola is a great option for any outdoor area, no matter how large or small but unless you’re opting for the traditional open pergola, you’re going to want some kind of roofing on the top of it to protect you from the sun, heat, and rain. The roofing is not just used for protection, though. It is one of the most important aesthetic features of the whole pergola and it can transform it from drab to fab. You could opt for a simple flat roof, or you can go right through to pitched roofs, gable and multi gable roofs, or even elaborate curved roofs, depending on what you are trying to achieve. There are roofing materials available to suit any kind of pergola roof.
Pergola Roofing Options
There are several different options that you can use for roofing your pergola. These include:
- Angled battens: angled battens are battens that are designed to keep out the hot summer sun but still let light and warmth through in winter.
- Climbing plants: you can use evergreen or deciduous climbers on your pergola roof for a charming, attractive look. Deciduous climbers have the added advantage of summer shade and winter sun.
- Colorbond: Colorbond roofing is a popular option for roofing your pergola and you can match it with your main roof in order to create a coordinated look.
- Zincalume: is another metal roofing option that is extremely suited to pergolas. Metal roofing is both strong and attractive.
- Polycarbonate: this type of roofing is great if you want to let in light underneath the pergola. Some types of polycarbonate roofing can reflect heat or stop UV rays from penetrating through, making the area underneath safer and more comfortable. Types of polycarbonate roofing include Laserlite, compact polycarbonate, and multiwall polycarbonate.
- Thatching: creates a brilliant tropical look on pergolas, especially those that are freestanding.
- Shade cloth: a simple solution but shade cloth is great for reducing the force of the summer sun and making the area underneath comfortable.
- Tiles: on some pergolas tiles may be a roofing option but you will need to talk to your professional about this. If real tiles cannot be used, metal sheeting that is pressed to look like tiles is an alternative.
