Does decking installation include nail mark? Yes and No? Cos there are 3 methods of doing installation.
Hidden Clip System
Reliable but expensive, No Nail mark as the nails are hidden totally
The clip system is meant for the composite decking or hardwood whereby the deck is already grooved and a hidden clip is used to screw the deck to the batten. All composite decking will be using this system, NO nail mark will be seen. For Chengal and Ironwood decking that need a No Nail mark installation, there are several criteria for creating such. and the price has to be different from the normal installation price. Cos we need to groove the deck and using decking clips.
Direct Face Nail Method.
Reliable but Cheap, Nail mark is seen as tiny dot.
While the Nails need to be install to the deck, to ensure that the deck is stable and reliable. Direct face Nail method will ensure reliable decking and with warranty of up to 10 years.
Industrial practice uses this method. Supertimber will be using only stainless steel nails that will be weather resistant and corrosion free.
Removable Wood Panelling Method
Unreliable yet Cheap, No Nail mark, cos nails are hit from the bottom, less work for the installer as well. As the installer need to fabricate the deck in the factory, and installing the deck take less than 1 – 3 hour to complete.
If the Deck is to be totally removable, you will not be seeing nail mark, but you face warpage problem in the near future. There is no warranty…. against workmanship, as specialist knows that the wood will warp eventually. The nail is hit in from the bottom. there will be no nail mark to be seen. but the deck will warp because the deck is not fixed to the supporting batten.
Another issue that might arise from wood panelling method, will be ununiform gap, as the wood panels are removeable, the wood panel inbetween each other will be easily movable. and thus gaps will differ from time to time.
Wood panels are in the greatest danger of warping when in high humidity and moisture-rich environments. In fact, many wood panels bow in storage because of such conditions. If you enjoy seeing carpenters coming to your home every 4 months to 1 year… you may opt for this option. The only Solution to prevent warping is to install aluminium batten instead of wood batten. We have been using this method for all our Sentosa projects. The cost will be higher.
There is a Fourth method of installation that is known by the Installer as the Hidden nail method, which is extremely time consuming and costly. This method is usually done at the Hotels and resorts that we do.
